DO Day at Capitol Hill!
DO Day 2010 was the first DO Day our chapter participated in! Join us as we network with current DOs, premed students and medical students while marching and lobbying for changes in our health care and compensation system on Capitol Hill. The things you learn and experience here is great fodder for future medical school interviews and it is always good to be aware of the problems being faced and possible solutions in your desired profession...more details to come!
Shadow UMDNJ SOM Students!
We will match you up with a first or second year medical student (many are TCNJ alumni!) for a day or a couple of days. Sit in on actual lectures, watch an OMM lab, walk into an anatomy lab and check out what a typical day of medical school consists of. Ask any specific questions you may have and get the inside scoop on professors, the application process, board examinations, etc. You are responsible for transportation to and from UMDNJ SOM but many times you can carpool with other members. If you are interested, please read the file below and come sign up at one of our meetings!

Visit Local Osteopathic Medical Schools!
Every spring we visit Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Typically a Wednesday mid-semester, we drive over, have lunch (provided), meet with 1st/2nd year students, speak with Marsha Williams (Assistant Director of Admissions Office), take a tour of the campus and sit in on a OMM lab. Past attendees have given us feedback: Ms. Williams gives many helpful tips about the admissions process and creating a competitive application, the students share interesting stories about their time at PCOM and explain the kinds of things you should ask at interviews, and the OMM lab is a really neat experience because you are actually sitting in on a class and learning the types of manipulations DOs use in OMT.
In the future we would like to visit either NYCOM or UMDNJ SOM during the Fall semester. Help us plan it by sharing your preferences (which school, what would you like to see/do) at our meetings!

Speakers!
Here are some speakers we have invited to TCNJ in the past:
Ronald Berezniak, PhD: Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs at LECOM Bradenton
Dr. Berezniak held an informal discussion about what it means to be a DO, how he came to appreciate the DO philosophy, what makes an application competitive, his own personal experiences as well as the experiences of the physicians in his family, and some of the things LECOM Bradenton is especially proud of (2nd highest rate of passing boards in the nation!).
Mr. Ramon Villongco: Assistant Director of Admissions at NYCOM
Mr. Villongco started off by highlighting the qualities of a DO and then shared the types of programs TCNJ students would be interested in at NYCOM. He also gave exact statistics about the admissions process and described what kinds of MCAT scores, GPA, and extra-curricular activities often lead to an invitation to an interview (for NYCOM specifically). Finally, he showed members a short Grey's Anatomy clip that highlighted some of the technology students use at NYCOM while training and studying for the boards!
UMDNJ SOM Student Panel
Four/Five students from UMDNJ SOM come in to answer specific questions, share details about their school and give a short demonstration of some manipulations they have learned in OMM lab! Many are TCNJ alumni so they understand our curriculum and the admissions process from our perspective!
Paula Watkins, MAS: Director of Enrollment Services at UMDNJ SOM
A particularly lively and entertaining speaker, Ms. Watkins explains the differences between DOs and MDs while sharing personal anecdotes from recent (successful) applications she has read. She understands the admissions process at both UMDNJ NJMS and UMDNJ SOM well and offers specific guidance to our members!
ExamKrackers Representative
The ExamKrackers Rep. thoroughly explained what makes the ExamKrackers MCAT course a good choice and then went on to give pointers about how to use the books and the things he personally did to get (recently) high MCAT scores and science GPA. He also had us do a neat activity--he only gave us the answers of a verbal reasoning passage (without the passage or the questions) and had us rationally pick the answer that was most likely to be correct with no prior knowledge about the author or contents of the passage!
Dr. O'Connell (Chair of the Medical Careers Advisory Committee)
Dr. O'Connell gave a quick rundown of the process of applying to DO schools from TCNJ including important details such as deadlines for application components at TCNJ, things to focus on each year at TCNJ and some guidance on the types of extracurricular activities and clinical experiences medical admissions committees look for in successful applicants.
Next semester we will be inviting a local DO physician!

Volunteer Events/Activities!
Some volunteer activities we participate in:
American Red Cross Blood Center in Princeton: Donate your time in two hour blocks every other Saturday to help blood drives run smoothly!
Community Blood Drive (Spring Semester at TCNJ): Help us coordinate blood drives here at TCNJ! Publicize, accumulate sign ups, and table in shifts to help save three lives per pint of blood!
Next year we hope to add a few activities like a health fair with other medically/science oriented organizations at TCNJ and develop a weekly opportunity with TCNJ Bonner Scholars!
